On behalf of Chelton Flight Systems, Wulfsberg Electronics
has received FAA TSO approval for the world's first and only synthetic
vision EFIS (Electronic Flight Instrument System).
The EFIS product has been selected by the FAA for implementation in its
Capstone program. The Capstone program is an aggressive program being
championed by the Alaskan region of the FAA. This program is intended
to prove new flight, navigation, and communication standards to further
improve the safety of flight in the otherwise difficult Alaskan flight
environment.
The EFIS provides military-style heads-up display symbology overlaying
a forward-looking real-time virtual reality display of the aircraft's
flight. The picture on the screen provides the pilot with a scene ahead
of the aircraft that features three-dimensional terrain, towers, antennas,
obstructions, other air traffic, and the complete airport runway environment.
The second EFIS unit in an installation will be able to display a bird's
eye (down-looking) display view of the flight with traditional GPS based
moving map and related routes for the aircraft.
The EFIS product concept was originally developed by Sierra Flight Systems
for the experimental aircraft market. Sierra Flight Systems was purchased
by Chelton Avionics, Inc. in 2001 years ago and renamed Chelton Flight
Systems. Wulfsberg, also a business unit of Chelton Avionics will be manufacturing
and holding the TSO for the EFIS product line. Chelton Flight Systems
will continue to develop and enhance this product line and will provide
sales, marketing and field service support.
